We’re well into the Shapeshifters Promo and after a fun array of weird and wild goalkeeper cards, we decided to take a look at some of the real life Shapeshifters. Those outfielders who took it upon themselves to help out their team and take a shift in between the sticks.
Columbus Crew starting goalkeeper Abraham Romero got sent off with the score at 0-0 and without a backup goalkeeper on the bench. Defender Sean Zawadzki replaced him in goal, they went on to lose 4-0 but he did make 2 saves.
Mike Maignan was sent off in the 97th minute against Genoa. With Milan using all 5 substitutes it was Giroud who stepped up. He made a crucial save in the 104th minute to keep the score at 1-0 and secure the three points. After the match Milan sold Giroud Goalkeeper jerseys and he was even named in the Serie A Team of The Week.
After Ederson left the field injured and substitute keeper Claudio Bravo was sent off, Kyle Walker became the hero. He played the remaining 18 minutes of a crucial Champions League tie against Atalanta where he made a couple of solid saves and kept a clean sheet.
Galatasaray Goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera was sent off after giving away a penalty in added time against Elazığspor. Felipe Melo took his gloves and stood between the sticks to face a last minute penalty. He saved it. Pressure? What pressure? Pressure is for tires.
Having already scored a hat-trick in a Europa League game with Greek side Asteras Tripoli, Harry Kane felt confident enough to step up after Hugo Lloris was sent off in the 87th minute. He did let a free kick slip through his hands and under his legs into the goal, but the tie was already well won by then.
Lukáš Hrádecký was sent off for a handball in the 92nd minute of a Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund. Having made all of their changes, Edmond Tapsoba took his gloves for the final minutes. Leverkusen did lose the match 1-0, but this was before the Defender went in goal.
After a mass Covid-19 infection to the River Plate squad, they were left with just 11 players for their matchup against Independiente. Unfortunately for them, all 11 of those players were outfielders. With Perez not fully fit, River decided that he wouldn’t make enough of an impact in midfield, so he was the chosen one. This performance has since been honoured in the River Plate museum.
After Robert Sánchez was sent off in the 92nd minute of the match against Newcastle United, Lewis Dunk played in goal for the remaining minutes of the match as Brighton had used all three of their substitutes. The game ended 1-1, as it was when Dunk put on the gloves. No goal conceded although it was only for a few minutes.
Edwin van der Sar was subbed off at half time in the FA Cup Quarter Final against Portsmouth. His replacement Tomasz Kuszczak was then sent off midway through the second half after conceding a penalty. It was Rio Ferdinand who stepped up. He couldn’t prevent Muntari scoring the penalty as Portsmouth went on to win the game 1-0.
After goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was sent off in the second half away at Napoli, it was captain Enrico Delprato who took on the responsibility. They were leading 1-0 when he put the gloves on, but the game did not end in their favour. Despite holding on for 15 minutes, Napoli managed to break them down twice in injury time, winning the game 2-1.
We have seen some of these feature in Shapeshifter promos, with the latest being Sean Zawadzki. Unfortunately we won’t be seeing a Harry Kane Goalkeeper but that doesn’t rule out some of the others featuring if there’s a Team 4 this Friday…
